The UK mining and quarrying sector covers aggregates, stone, sand and gravel, and a small amount of remaining coal and mineral extraction. Demand is closely tied to construction and infrastructure spending, so when building activity slows, the quarries and pits that feed it feel it quickly.

These are capital-heavy businesses with expensive plant, restoration obligations and high energy and haulage bills. A downturn in construction, a planning or environmental setback, or a spike in fuel costs can turn a profitable site into a loss-making one within a couple of quarters.
